Some people argue that imprisoning offenders is an effective way to address crime, whereas others believe that education and vocational training are more beneficial. I totally disagree with the latter view, as prison plays a crucial role (crucial role – vai trò then chốt / an extremely important function) in maintaining public safety and deterring criminal behavior.

The primary reason why education cannot replace imprisonment is that prisons are designed to incapacitate offenders (incapacitate offenders – vô hiệu hóa tội phạm / prevent criminals from causing further harm), thereby safeguarding society. Individuals who have violated the law, particularly those guilty of heinous crimes (heinous crimes – tội ác ghê rợn / extremely evil criminal acts), pose a serious threat to the public if left at liberty. By keeping such criminals behind bars (behind bars – ở trong tù / imprisoned), governments can ensure that innocent citizens are protected from further violence. For instance, serial killers or political terrorists, who show no signs of rehabilitation, should receive life sentences so that law-abiding citizens (law-abiding citizens – công dân tuân thủ pháp luật / people who obey the law) can live without fear.

Another compelling reason is that strict prison sentences act as a powerful crime deterrent (crime deterrent – biện pháp răn đe tội phạm / something that discourages crime). The prospect of being arrested, losing personal freedom, and enduring a miserable existence (miserable existence – cuộc sống khốn khổ / extremely unhappy life) in a confined cell can discourage potential offenders from engaging in illegal activities. When individuals realize that criminal acts may result in years of incarceration, they are more likely to reconsider and refrain from going down the path of crime (going down the path of crime – dấn thân vào con đường phạm pháp / start committing crimes). For example, severe penalties for drug trafficking have significantly reduced crime rates in several countries.

In conclusion, prison sentences are indispensable because they both protect society and discourage criminal intentions, making them more effective than education alone.
