The line graph compares the proportion of female members of parliament in five European countries – Germany, Italy, France, the UK and Belgium – between 2000 and 2012.
Overall, three countries – the UK, Italy and Germany – showed consistent increases throughout the period. By contrast, France experienced fluctuations, while Belgium rose initially and then levelled off slightly towards the end.
Body 1: Countries with a consistently upward trend (UK, Italy, Germany)
Among the three countries with upward trends, the UK recorded the fastest growth. It started at just 4% in 2000, rose to about 9% in 2004, and then increased sharply to around 20% in 2008, before reaching approximately 28% in 2012. Italy also climbed steadily, from roughly 26% in 2000 to just over 30% in 2004. The figure continued to rise consistently to about 33% in 2008 and peaked at nearly 39% in 2012, the highest level among all five countries. Body 2: Countries with fluctuating or mixed trends (France, Belgium)
France displayed a fluctuating pattern. It rose markedly from about 25% in 2000 to a peak of around 37% in 2004, but then declined significantly to roughly 30% in 2008, before recovering slightly to just over 31% in 2012.
Belgium followed a different pattern: it increased sharply from about 17% in 2000 to nearly 28% in 2004, but then edged down slightly to around 27–28% in both 2008 and 2012, ending the period at roughly the same level as in 2008.
