Rapid population growth in cities has become a defining feature of modern urbanisation, provoking debate about whether it primarily benefits urban residents or creates serious drawbacks. While some argue that expanding city populations generate prosperity and opportunity for locals, I contend that such growth produces significant social and environmental problems.
On the one hand, proponents believe that rapid urban population growth can stimulate economic vitality (kích thích sức sống kinh tế – boost economic dynamism) by attracting investment, businesses and skilled workers. As cities expand, they often become job-rich hubs (trung tâm việc làm dồi dào – employment-dense centres) where residents enjoy greater access to diverse career opportunities and higher wages. Furthermore, a growing population justifies large-scale public investment in state-of-the-art infrastructure (cơ sở hạ tầng hiện đại – advanced infrastructure), such as mass transit systems, hospitals and universities, which directly enhances residents’ quality of life. However, critics, myself included, argue that unchecked population growth places immense pressure on cities. One major concern is overstretched public services (dịch vụ công quá tải – services operating beyond capacity), leading to overcrowded schools, strained healthcare systems and unreliable transportation. In addition, housing demand often outpaces supply, resulting in skyrocketing living costs (chi phí sinh hoạt tăng vọt – sharply rising expenses) that marginalise low-income residents. Environmental degradation is another serious consequence, as densely populated cities suffer from air pollution, traffic congestion and diminishing green spaces, undermining overall liveability.
In my opinion, although rapid urban population growth can generate economic advantages, its disadvantages are more profound unless it is carefully managed. Without strategic planning and sustainable policies, the negative impacts can outweigh the benefits, making urban expansion a double-edged sword rather than a guaranteed advantage.
