      • Example: Singapore's compulsory savings scheme for retirement, known as the Central Provident Fund (CPF), requires working adults to contribute a portion of their wages to a savings account. This successful scheme has helped Singaporeans accumulate substantial CPF balances, with an average of S$234,000 (about US$160,000) for individuals aged 55 in 2022. By providing sufficient retirement savings, the CPF scheme reduces reliance on government assistance and eases the financial burden on the government, which paid out S$22 billion (about US$15 billion) in old-age benefits in the same year.

    • Main idea 2: Since savings-oriented people are not dependent on the state for their living expenses, this may instill a sense of self-respect and pride in them.
      • Supporting idea: In order to live a life with dignity and pride, taking responsibility for funding one’s own retirement is evidently a better option from individual perspective.

        • The age pensions scheme can help the aged community who could no longer earn money get access to basic amenities in life, including accommodation, food, and medical care.
      • Example: A study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that the age pensions scheme reduces the risk of poverty among older people. The study found that people who receive a pension are less likely to live in poverty than those who do not receive a pension.
    • Main idea 2:  it is increasingly common for the aged now to live all alone without their family around; therefore, they should receive proper care and support from nursing homes.
      • Supporting idea: The social life and the help of professionals at such places can stop them from feeling isolated and depressed, providing them a sense of community.
      • Example: A study by the Pew Research Center found that the number of adults aged 65 and older who live alone has increased by 50% since 1960. The study found that this trend is especially pronounced among women, with 44% of women aged 65 and older living alone, compared to 27% of men.
