Young people are often influenced by those of a similar age, a phenomenon commonly referred to as peer pressure. While this influence can sometimes be beneficial, I firmly believe that its detrimental (harmful – gây hại) effects far outweigh any advantages.
One major reason why peer pressure is largely negative is that it can precipitate (trigger – gây ra) harmful behaviours such as drug use, alcohol consumption (the act of using – sự tiêu thụ) and unsafe sexual practices. Adolescents, whose decision-making skills are still developing, are particularly susceptible (easily influenced – dễ bị tác động) to social influence. When surrounded by peers who normalise such high-risk behaviours (dangerous actions – hành vi rủi ro cao), young people may engage in them merely to gain acceptance. For instance, a study conducted in a suburban school district revealed that teenagers experiencing peer pressure were more likely to experiment with alcohol and drugs or participate in unprotected sexual activities, posing long-term threats to their physical and mental health.>> 🔥 Form đăng kí giải đề thi thật IELTS 4 kĩ năng kèm bài giải bộ đề 100 đề PART 2 IELTS SPEAKING quý đang thi (update hàng tuần) từ IELTS TUTOR
Another significant drawback is that peer pressure often erodes (gradually destroys – làm xói mòn) individuality and promotes blind conformity. In highly image-conscious (overly concerned with appearance – quá chú trọng hình ảnh) peer groups, adolescents may suppress their genuine interests to align with prevailing norms. This pressure to conform can lead to a loss of self-identity (mất bản sắc cá nhân), as individuals prioritise social approval over personal values. For example, in many high schools, the widespread influence of fashionable trends compels students to imitate their peers, even when such trends conflict with their own preferences, thereby undermining creativity and self-expression.
In conclusion, although peer pressure can occasionally encourage positive actions, its tendency to foster risky behaviours and suppress individuality makes it a force whose disadvantages clearly outweigh its advantages.
